Judge’s Comments:

Deadly flooding in and around the Houston area obviously created chaos, sadness and confusion for citizens.  The compilation of stories by KHOU-TV the next day covered numerous important angles and provided viewers with a lot of need to know information.

Following reports on the deaths and current state of flooding – including a welcomed forecast of a small chance of light rain the next day – the team dug into the mess of vehicles that were stalled on highways and eventually towed to impound lots.  An excellent story was reported on how people could get those, why it was taking so long and what to do about insurance.  And the use of a viewer’s drone footage really brought the rushing waters into perspective.  Within 24 hours, the station had a fundraiser set for the Red Cross and interviews with government officials – including the President – on what aid the area could expect.

KHOU-TV showed their excellence in journalism by using teams of reporter, photographers and producers along with deployed news gathering equipment to bring real stories to Houston.  Well done! – Kent Cornish, President, Kansas Association of Broadcasters
