“Without a Name”

Every day in the Rio Grande Valley, migrants die while trying to circumvent the Border Patrol checkpoints. Often times, they are found without any sort of identification on them. Texas law requires unidentified remains be investigated and DNA samples taken to be entered into databases of missing people, before a body can be buried. Those regulations aren’t always followed. Cemeteries all over South Texas have remains of unknown people, many don’t even have a grave marker.

This report revealed a problem that has caused hundreds of immigrants to be buried without identification efforts, leaving their families without answers as to what happened to them. It impacts Texas government on a state a local level by revealing how county governments are not following state law, and the state is doing nothing about it.
