2022 Gold Showcase Investigative Award: "Uvalde Shooting and its Aftermath"

The winners of this year’s Gold Showcase Investigative Award went to The Texas Tribune for it’s coverage of the Uvalde School Shooting.

The contest entry highlighted that the Tribune mobilized its entire newsroom to cover the second-deadliest school shooting in the U.S. The staff “leaned into [their] expertise on politics and public policy to provide immediate contest for readers and respectful, compassionate coverage of the community,” Sewell Chan wrote for the entry. The publication’s “prominently featured coverage used data, images, video, audio recordings, and exclusive access to investigative materials to produce revelatory stories about blame-shifting by state officials, 911 calls from inside the school, and the delayed EMS response.”

Tribune reporters Lomi Kriel (also with ProPublica) and Uriel Garcia, two recipients of the award-winning team, spoke with the Headliners Foundation’s Mark Morrison to discuss their award-winning coverage.
