2012 Mike Quinn Awards Luncheon

In a video welcome, CBS’ Bob Schieffer fondly remembered receiving a Headliners Foundation award some 20 years ago. He emphasized that regardless of form–print or digital–localnewspapers will always serve a critical role in our democracy as the primary source of independently-gathered news, upholding the true standards of journalism.

John Lumpkin, Director of TCU’s School of Journalism which carries Bob Schieffer’s name, outlined the strengths and challenges of a journalism degree. He suggested that journalism students can learn much by following industry legends such as Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham, CBS broadcast journalist Walter Cronkite, and Associated Press photographer Malcolm Browne, for example. TCU encourages real life experiences, internships, jobs, lab work, and campus media that allow students to practice the profession as an important part of their training.
